Nine die in Kuzbass care home during flu outbreak

A commission has identified nine deaths among residents at a care home in the city of Prokopyevsk, where a flu outbreak occurred. The vast majority of the people died from heart problems, NGS42.RU reported on Thursday, 29 January 2026, citing the Ministry of Social Protection of Kuzbass.

«A thorough check of the reasons for what happened will be conducted for each case with the involvement of all competent authorities. The information has been passed on to law enforcement for legal assessment,» the department said.

According to expert conclusions, nine people died, the youngest of whom was 19 and the oldest 79.

  • A 69-year-old woman died from decompensation of long-term heart failure in an ambulance;

  • A 67-year-old woman died from chronic heart failure at the psycho-neurological care home;

  • Two 79-year-old women died at the care home from encephalopathy and decompensation of heart failure;

  • A 42-year-old man died from thromboembolism at the Prokopyevsk City Hospital;

  • A 68-year-old man died from chronic lung disease at the Prokopyevsk City Hospital;

  • A 21-year-old woman diagnosed with cerebral palsy died at the psycho-neurological care home.

The causes of death of a 19-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman are being determined; both died at the city hospital.

Earlier, sources of NGS42.RU at the institution said that people at the care home were kept in cold premises, which could have led to a deterioration of their health and complication of illnesses.

The care home«s director, Yelena Morozova, allegedly knew about the situation but took no measures, and there was an attempt to conceal the outbreak of infections.
