The mother of a young man injured at a factory in Novosibirsk has spoken about his condition. 21-year-old Daniil went through a coma and lengthy treatment after his arm was dragged into a grinding machine last year.

As the young man«s mother Yekaterina explained, after the incident her son was in the hospital for several months. She stayed with him the entire time.

“They moved him to a four-bed room, we lived with men. I was with them, slept on the floor next to him. From when it all happened, I didn«t leave. They relieved me for an hour or two,” said Yekaterina. “My sister and grandmother came so I could at least wash up, eat, or go get something.”

Yekaterina clarified that Daniil could not be left unsupervised during that period — he had just emerged from a coma. His arm was not functional, he couldn«t walk, and his vision had worsened.

“Initially, he had 100% vision, after the tragedy it dropped to 30%. He started eating, slowly saying something, and it was all so slurred,” recalled Yekaterina. “Everything took a very long time.”

Besides his arm, the young man had a damaged jaw. He underwent treatment for several months, after which he was discharged home. At first, Daniil moved around in a wheelchair, and then he started rehabilitating the injured parts of his body.

“His leg would move on its own in different directions, he couldn«t control it. His right hand couldn»t hold a spoon, he couldn«t write. Small objects — definitely not. We suffered like that for about a year,” said the woman. “We were on sick leave at the clinic, constantly. We are still on sick leave now.”

According to his mother, the Siberian man was granted disability status, and he lived with it for a year. At the last medical commission, the status was removed, and his ability to work is reduced. Yekaterina believes her son still needs time to recover.

“I talk with neurosurgeons. They explain to me that at least a year is needed to make any more progress. If we don«t continue with rehabilitation, he will remain like this for life. He has facial asymmetry, 60% vision,” she explained.

According to his mother, the young man still has problems with his leg and arm. Yekaterina added that her son will prepare for jaw surgery, which was refused at the start of treatment. At that time, the mother feared that the young man wouldn«t withstand another medical intervention.

“It«s not to say that he»s healthy, or that he«s in a serious condition. He»s always kind of sleepy. Now we will have to do the jaw surgery anyway,” she said.

After that, rehabilitation will also be required.

In September, in Novosibirsk, a man«s arm was caught in a wallpaper printing machine at a factory. He sustained a serious injury.
