Five houseplants can forecast weather, expert says
Some indoor plants are able to react in advance to weather changes, so with their help, you can not only liven up your interior but also predict what the day will be like. An expert has listed flowers that have such properties.
“Such reactions can be explained by changes in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity of the surrounding air. When these parameters change, such plants start to release moisture. In folk sayings, it is said that the plant is crying. A whole range of plants are able to predict the weather in this way. They are also called weather-forecasting plants,” explained Tatiana Chernova, a practicing landscape designer.
The appearance of droplets on the leaves of Monstera deliciosa, Alocasia, and indoor banana indicates that rain is coming (in summer) or a thaw is approaching (in winter).
“Balsam becomes covered with droplets before the onset of clear sunny weather, after cloudy days,” the specialist explained. “Maranta also curls its leaves when humidity is high, which is why it is called «prayer plant.»”
Oxalis closes its flowers and curls its leaves before bad weather. It can be said that owners of such a flower have both a barometer and a clock, as at dusk the leaves fold up and only open towards the sun.
Violet opens its flowers before clear weather. Indoor roses become more fragrant when humidity increases.
