Trichologist: What Causes Dandruff and How to Treat It

Dandruff remains one of the most common problems related to the scalp and hair. Many shampoos are advertised as an effective remedy against it; however, according to Natalya Bruenok, a trichologist of the highest category, the true causes often lie deeper than surface care.
The simplest factor is an incorrectly chosen shampoo.
Natalya Bruenok explains: «If it is not right for you, it will excessively dry out your scalp, and it will flake. This is dry seborrhea — commonly known as dandruff. But there are also deeper reasons that come from within. The skin is a mirror of your internal organs. [If dandruff appears], it can indicate a disruption in the gastrointestinal tract. It is quite possible that you are consuming a lot of sugar, and this can provoke flaking on the scalp and various dermatitis.»
The specialist also notes the influence of tap water quality. She cited a case from her practice where a patient«s seborrhea went away on its own after moving to another area of the city with cleaner water.
Instead of searching for solutions on the internet, the doctor recommends undergoing an examination by a trichologist or dermatologist to accurately determine the cause of the condition.
How to Choose the Right Shampoo?
Natalya Bruenok gives the following recommendations: «First of all, we look at the hair type, whether it is dyed or not. Second, of course, is the composition — it should contain at least 15 beneficial components. Including sulfates, by the way. Sometimes patients come to me and say they only use sulfate-free shampoo. But I am an opponent of such compositions because sulfates are also needed; they wash hair thoroughly.»
To prevent excessive drying of the skin and hair, it is worth choosing shampoos containing moisturizing components — oils, vitamins, or plant extracts. After washing, it is necessary to use a conditioner or mask, and the products can be from different brands.
