Authorities Link Tyumen School Outbreak to Unwashed Hands

The government of Tyumen Oblast has reported new data on the outbreak of gastrointestinal infection in the village of Onokhino. The results of the epidemiological investigation were presented at a meeting of the regional sanitary and anti-epidemic commission.
According to official information, out of 78 samples taken from pupils of the local school, 23 children tested positive for norovirus—a highly contagious intestinal infection. As authorities explained, the virus is transmitted, among other ways, through unwashed hands and violations of personal hygiene rules.
“This is a contagious virus that spreads from unwashed hands and other hygiene-related factors. Today, we are very clearly and strictly monitoring the sanitary condition of all institutions where our children study across the entire territory of Tyumen Oblast. This decision was made at the sanitary-epidemiological commission,” stated Olga Kuznechevskikh, Vice-Governor of Tyumen Oblast.
Over the past day, no new appeals from residents of Onokhino with symptoms of the disease have been received. The kindergarten, located in the same building as the school, has been temporarily closed for quarantine, despite the absence of sick individuals. Sanitary treatment will be conducted at the institution.
According to authorities, starting today, relevant services have begun inspections of all preschool and school institutions in the region. Additionally, morning filters are being introduced in Tyumen Oblast.
“If a child comes to school and already feels unwell, regardless of whether it’s norovirus, a cold, or flu, they must undergo a morning filter and be sent home. These filters will be conducted by teachers, educators, and medical staff of the institutions,” explained the deputy governor.
The entire healthcare system of Tyumen Municipal District has been put on high alert. Pharmacies in the village of Onokhino have been instructed and provided with the necessary stock of medicines, with no drug shortages. Similar preventive measures will be strengthened in other municipalities of the oblast.
Regional authorities reported on the outbreak of gastrointestinal infection on Thursday, January 29, 2026. It was later reported that among the affected were 116 children. Parents of infected schoolchildren told what symptoms the children had in the first hours. Everything known about the situation is covered in a separate story.
