After Water Pipe Repairs, Infectious Disease Outbreak Hits Kostroma Region

An infectious disease outbreak has occurred in the Kostroma Region. Nearly 30 residents of Sholokhovo village in the Krasnoselsky District fell ill after water pipe repairs in the settlement, the Investigative Committee reported.

Water samples have been collected for laboratory testing as part of the investigation.

«According to the investigation, residents of Sholokhovo village showed signs of an acute infectious disease after the water pipe repair work in the settlement. Preliminary information indicates that eight adults and twenty minors sought medical help,» the department reported.

Investigators have opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 238 of the Russian Criminal Code (performance of work or provision of services that do not meet safety requirements for the life or health of consumers). Law enforcement officials have already obtained explanations from the head of the resource-supplying organization and a representative of the Krasnoselsky District administration, and have inspected the well and the site of the water pipe rupture.

«Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing) employees have taken water samples, which have been sent for analysis. The investigation is currently studying the necessary documentation and conducting a set of investigative actions aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident,» the Investigative Committee reported.
