Volgograd to close Zero Longitudinal for athletics run

On Sunday, February 1, a section of the Zero Longitudinal Highway in Volgograd will be closed to traffic for an athletics run dedicated to the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The authorities of Volgograd announced a temporary traffic restriction on a section of the Zero Longitudinal due to the 79th athletics run.

The closure will affect the segment from Marshal Krylov Street to Komsomolskaya Street. Traffic will be prohibited from 07:00 to 14:00 on Sunday, February 1, during which time pedestrian mode will be in effect.

The route of the 79th athletics run, dedicated to the 83rd anniversary of the defeat of the German-fascist troops by Soviet forces in the Battle of Stalingrad, will pass along the 62nd Army Embankment from the intersection with Komsomolskaya Street to the Volgograd Arena stadium, clarified the administration. The start and finish of the run will be set up near the memorial complex «Armored Boat BK-31». The event will begin at 10:00 with a laying of flowers at the memorial sign to the Heroes of the Volga Military Flotilla. Athletes will start the 1-kilometer distance at 10:30. A mandatory requirement is a medical clearance. Participation in the event is free.

The administration also announced other sporting events timed to the anniversary of the Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.

From January 29 to February 1, the Volgograd College of Management and New Technologies named after Yuri Gagarin is hosting a Volleyball Championship for girls born in 2014-2015.
Similar competitions for boys will be held from February 5 to 8.
On January 31, cross-country skiing races will take place at the Zenit sports complex. Anyone with sports equipment can participate, starting at 10:00.
On February 3-4, the Open Volgograd Championship in Artistic Gymnastics will be held in the hall of Sports School No. 1.
The participants in these traditional events will be about 150 students from municipal physical education and sports institutions aged 7 to 18.

The day before, traffic was closed on the Third Longitudinal Highway in the city. The cause was an accident: a truck veered into a ditch, causing a traffic jam nearly two kilometers long.
