Kresty wins vote to name former prison public space

The historic name 'Kresty' won a vote for the public space planned at the former detention facility in St. Petersburg, with 71% of participants supporting it.

The name «Kresty» was the absolute leader in the vote to name the new public zone on the site of the former detention center in St. Petersburg.
It received 8,730 votes, accounting for 71% of the total. Over 12,000 people participated in the poll, and the voting page garnered more than 52,000 views.
The results showed a significant gap between the winner and other options. In second place was «Pitersky Tsentral» with 1,142 votes (9%). The other proposals received the following support:
  • «18.92» — 927 votes
  • «XX / Iksy» — 721 votes
  • «Belye Nochi» (White Nights) — 534 votes
  • «Prostranstvo No. 1» — 136 votes
  • «XXI VEK» — 123 votes
The voting was launched in December 2025.
The new owner of the territory, the company KVS, plans to carry out reconstruction work over approximately five years. The project involves restoring the buildings« historical appearance while adapting them for modern functions. After the transformations, the site will feature two hotel complexes with developed infrastructure, a gastronomic street, a pedestrian promenade with art objects, and thematic »memory islands.«
