Anomalous Frosts Rage in Leningrad Region
The weather station in Vyborg recorded a temperature of -26°C (-15°F). Simultaneously, eight observation points in the region reported readings below -25 degrees Celsius (-13°F).
Conditions in the east of the Leningrad Region were even harsher. At several stations, thermometer readings dropped to -28 and -29 degrees Celsius (-18°F and -20°F).
Lake Ladoga moderated the weather in St. Petersburg, directing warmer and more humid air masses into the city with a northeast wind. The cold snap occurred in the early morning when the wind shifted to a northwesterly direction.
Chief meteorologist of St. Petersburg Alexander Kolesov reported on the anomalous cold on January 30. He noted that the most severe frosts are observed in areas not subject to the moderating influence of Lake Ladoga.
