Tallest Palm Tree in Russia Blooms in Tomsk

The top of the palm tree is adorned with tens of thousands of small flowers
In the Botanical Garden of TSU, the tallest greenhouse palm tree in Russia has bloomed. Staff cut off one inflorescence from the top so that visitors could see it, the Botanical Garden«s press service reported.
«Despite the 30-degree frost (minus 22°F) outside, spring is beginning in the greenhouses of the TSU Botanical Garden — palm trees are blooming. Visitors can admire the flowering of the tallest palm tree in indoor cultivation — the southern livistona, as well as South American chamaedoreas and the »fishtail« palm,» the Botanical Garden said.
They reported that 12 inflorescences appeared on the palm tree thanks to the fact that several years ago, a glass dome was built on the roof of the Botanical Garden building for its top. On one of its inflorescences, about 130,000 small flowers can be counted. The diameter of each is about 3 millimeters.
So that visitors could see the inflorescences located at a height of 20 meters (66 feet), greenhouse workers cut off one flower stalk and placed it in a vase nearby.
It is added that the dome for the Tomsk palm tree was assembled in 2024. This will allow the tree to grow in height for another 10 years.
