Khabensky Stars in Dramedy 'Yura Was Here'

The premiere of the youth dramedy «Yura Was Here» took place at the Aurora cinema. Konstantin Khabensky plays the disabled Yura, who is placed in the care of his nephew Oleg and his friend Seryoga for ten days. The young men combine caring for their relative with rehearsals for their rock band.

The feature-length debut of director Sergey Malkin, a graduate of Alexey Popogrebsky«s workshop, is built on an idea reminiscent of »Rain Man«. The authors sought to avoid excessive sentimentality and speculating on pity for characters with disabilities.

The film stars Denis Paramonov as Oleg, Kuzma Kotrelev as Seryoga, and Vasily Mikhailov as the neighbor Andrey. The characters are portrayed as «young guys» whose initially cynical attitude towards Yura gradually gives way to involvement.
While in «Rain Man» the moral transformation lasts a week, here it is allotted ten days. This timeframe is dictated by the plot: Oleg«s father, who was looking after Yura, gets ten days in jail for a drunken brawl.
Yura, who suffered a birth injury, does not speak and only nods. Konstantin Khabensky uses a dental prosthesis to create the image. The character smiles at the sight of jam, blinks frequently, and also skillfully shaves and spends time in the bath. A comedic touch is added by Andrey«s red washcloth, which Yura is forbidden to touch.
For credibility, the film includes the title «based on a true story», pseudo-documentary footage, and actor improvisations. The dialogue features fresh memes, such as «Safonov, pay up», and the characters quote «Night Watch»: «Everyone, come out of the gloom!» In one episode, a line from the song «When I»m Gone...« is played with ironic laughter.
Critics note missed opportunities for humor. For example, the scene where Andrey brings a girl over and Yura is in the room does not receive full development, which reduces the comedic potential.
The question arises about the finances of the heroes, who rehearse all day without earning. The word «work» is heard only twice: Oleg«s mother works 12-hour shifts, and Andrey reminds about the need to go to work. Meanwhile, the musicians rent rooms in a Moscow apartment, and one of them has a car, probably thanks to relatives.
In the finale, the characters perform the song «I»ll Soon Be Forty« at a festival, hinting at possible maturation. Director Sergey Malkin advises viewers: »Relax and enjoy,« positioning the film as a lyrical music video rather than an emotional attraction.
