How to Catch Pike

A good catch depends on tackle, lure choice, location and correct retrieval technique.
Autumn — the best season for pike fishing. With October and the first frosts, this predator becomes especially active. Anglers therefore look for effective ways to catch pike. Amateur angler Alexey Chernyshov explained which tackle, lures and locations to use.
For successful pike fishing, choose the right tackle. The best option is a medium-action spinning rod, two to nearly three meters long, rated 10–30 grams. Use a fixed-spool spinning reel with a reliable drag.
«The main thing — don’t overtighten the drag, the line may break. Use a braided line about 0.12–0.18 mm thick. Don’t forget a metal or fluorocarbon leader, since pike’s teeth are very sharp and can easily cut line», — warned the expert.

Essential pike-fishing rules include correct tackle, lure selection, retrieval and thorough sector coverage.
For autumn pike lures, Alexey recommends proven options. 10–25 gram wobbling spoons in silver or gold deliver steady results. Among soft plastics, 7–12 cm vibrotails and twisters work well on jigheads and cheburashkas (bulb sinkers).
«Choose a range of colors. Natural tones: green, motor oil, brown. And bright attractors such as yellow, purple, orange», — noted Alexey Chernyshov.
Choose cranks and minnows that dive up to two meters. For beginners, the angler advises against buying many lures — instead take one or two of each type in different colors. Alexey also recommends carrying a lure retriever — it can save a lure if it becomes snagged underwater.
Correct retrieval technique plays a key role in pike fishing. For beginners the simplest method is a steady retrieve: cast the lure, let it sink, and retrieve without jerks. If that doesn’t work, Alexey Chernyshov suggests trying a stop-and-go retrieve. For soft plastics, a stepped retrieve with a pause on the bottom is effective — that pause is often when the predator strikes. Wobblers respond well to twitching: light rod twitches imitate an injured fish.
Fishing location also matters. In autumn pike stay near drop-offs, ledges, stream mouths and areas where baitfish gather. Promising spots include reed edges, submerged trees and openings in vegetation.
«Don’t stand in one place; cover the sector like a fan, move along the shore or from a boat», — recommends the angler.
Alexey advises watching the water surface closely: splashes and baitfish strikes are sure signs of a predator’s presence.
