At School No. 20 in the Krasnooktyabrsky District of Volgograd, which has classes with advanced subject study, three eighth-grade classes have been without a permanent teacher of Russian language and literature for several months. The previous teacher resigned, and the administration has been searching for a new specialist since June of last year.

Currently, lessons in these subjects, which are important for the upcoming State Final Examination (OGE) in a year, are conducted by a primary school teacher.

Since the start of the 2025 school year, we have had no teacher for Russian and literature. In May, both the Russian language and literature teacher and the mathematics teacher resigned. Algebra and geometry in the eighth grade are taught by a third-year student, and Russian has been substituted by a primary school teacher since the end of December. It is unknown how long she will stay and what knowledge she will impart to the children,
shared one of the parents. He added that his child is forced to study with a tutor to maintain academic performance.

According to data on job search websites, the vacancy for a teacher of Russian language and literature for grades 5–11 with a workload of 30 hours per week offers a monthly salary of 30,000 rubles ($333 at current rates). Young specialists are promised additional allowances of up to 11,000 rubles ($122 at current rates), as well as payment for class supervision—up to 6,000 rubles ($67 at current rates).

The director of the educational institution, Dmitry Zagumennov, declined to comment in detail on the staffing situation, stating only that it is stable.

I am not ready to comment on this situation right now. Our situation with teachers is stable. Even if teachers are ill, we try to cover all problems with current teachers,
he said.

An inquiry about whether the substituting teacher has the necessary qualifications for teaching in middle grades was sent to the city administration. At the time of preparing the material, no response had been received from officials.
