Volgograd Gymnasium Urgently Needs a Math Teacher

The photograph relates to the story of teacher recruitment difficulties in Volgograd schools.
Since the start of the third academic quarter, fifth graders at Gymnasium No. 13 in the Traktorozavodsky District of Volgograd have been without math lessons. The reason is the dismissal of the previous teacher and the inability to quickly find a replacement.
The school administration explains the situation by saying that other math teachers at the gymnasium do not want to take on additional workload. However, a source familiar with the matter links the problem to low pay.
‘Salary, working conditions, workload… Our teachers are obligated to do a lot, but essentially, they are engaged in charity. The problem is not specifically of this gymnasium, but of the state,’ the interlocutor noted. ‘Low salaries and high workload. There is no one to replace them. If they paid 100,000 rubles (approximately $1,100 at current rates), then perhaps young people would come to work. But for now, the rate is 16,000 rubles (about $178), what is there to talk about. This is lower than that of cleaners. It all turns into charity. The problem is known at the top, but for some reason it is not being solved…’
The search for a new specialist has been ongoing since the summer of 2024. The Career Center of Volgograd State Social Pedagogical University published a vacancy, according to which the gymnasium is inviting a math teacher for 26 hours a week to work with grades 5 to 9. Class leadership is possible. The salary is stated as 28,000 rubles (approximately $311).
On job search websites, the teacher«s responsibilities are listed:
- development and implementation of a work program in mathematics;
- conducting classes using modern methods and technologies;
- planning the educational process in accordance with the curriculum;
- preparation of reports, pedagogical control, and assessment of student performance.
The main requirement for the candidate is higher education. In these advertisements, the salary is indicated in the range from 28,000 to 40,000 rubles (approximately $311 to $444 at current rates).
