Urals teacher becomes national TV star
The teacher from Pervouralsk is the only semifinalist from Sverdlovsk Oblast in the competition.
A chemistry teacher from the Urals made it onto the federal show «Klassnaya Tema!». Yuliya Kalinina from Pervouralsk explained to schoolchildren across the country why sugar caramelizes when heated and why a white foam appears on the surface of soup as it cooks. Her video was aired on the Rossiya 1 TV channel.
Yuliya graduated from Lyceum No. 21 and returned there as a teacher. Not right away — her first degree is in biotechnology.
«I worked with a team that organized chemistry tournaments and educational sessions at a camp, and there I realized that I still wanted to work with children, — the teacher admitted to E1.RU. — For that I had to complete a one-year retraining course».
Yuliya Kalinina has worked at the school for more than five years. Last year the teacher taught a specialized medical class with only 11 students — ten of them took chemistry, and one scored 100 points on the Unified State Exam (EGE).
In her lessons, Yuliya tells students how to determine a cream’s emulsion type and how to reveal their own fingerprints on paper.
«Recently we examined the composition of toothpastes: what they contain, what properties they should have, and carried out an analysis. We checked several pastes — which is better, which is worse, — the teacher gave an example. — The last thing we did was study apples — why they turn brown. We ran experiments on how to prevent this process».
Not only a teacher, but also a blogger
Yuliya plans to develop her blog to the point that schoolchildren across Sverdlovsk Oblast watch her videos and more often choose chemistry on exams (or simply learn something new for themselves). To that end she has applied to another competition, «Flagman obrazovaniya» (Education Flagship).
«I will definitely try to popularize chemistry, — says Yuliya. — I absolutely love it. It’s a very lively science and it’s applicable in life. We shoot videos together with the students; they always support me in this, and they themselves become interested. Children really do motivate you and charge you up for new achievements».
Yuliya has worked at the school for over five years, trained first as a biotechnologist.
«I want to become an example of a great teacher, — Yuliya continued. — I’m probably not so interested in going down an administrative path as in becoming the kind of teacher the whole city and the whole region talk about, whom everyone knows. That is, I want to pass my knowledge on to children myself while always developing».
