Schools in Volgograd region go online amid freezing conditions

Local municipalities make decisions on moving classes online depending on the severity of cold weather.
The Volgograd Region Education Committee announced the introduction of distance learning in a number of schools in the region. The reason for the restrictions is severe frost that has been observed for several days in the region.
Recall that a sharp drop in temperature in the Volgograd region was noted from Friday, 23 January. In some places, thermometer readings fell so low that organizers were forced to cancel outdoor events. Meanwhile, children continued to study.
The education committee clarified that there are no uniform standards regulating the cancellation of classes depending on weather conditions, and decisions on canceling classes in districts are made by municipal authorities independently.
«Due to the peculiarities of the climate and the establishment of different temperatures, as well as depending on the territorial location of the district, standards are set by municipalities. The situation is monitored throughout the day and is under the control of the education committee,» the department stated. «In normal mode, all schools are operating in: Gorodishchensky, Dubovsky, Kalachevsky, Kamyshinsky, Kletsky, Kotelnikovsky, Kumylzhensky, Novoanninsky, Novonikolayevsky, Oktyabrsky, Staropoltavsky, Surovikinsky, Chernyshkovsky districts, as well as the cities of Kamyshin, Uryupinsk, Frolovo. In other municipalities, due to the frosts, some classes or schools have partially switched to distance learning.»
Additionally, according to forecasts from the Volgograd Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, extremely low temperatures are expected in the region on the evening of January 27 and January 28, but then long-awaited warming will come to the region.
