The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia is discussing the possibility of removing mentions of general qualifications from diplomas. The document proposes indicating only specific specialities.

«When transitioning to the new model of higher education, we are considering abandoning the fixation of general qualifications in diplomas that do not indicate the direction and profile of graduate training. In diplomas of those who have received basic higher and specialized higher education within the pilot project on changing the levels of professional education, specific qualifications understandable to employers will be indicated,» — TASS was informed by the ministry«s press service.

Professions in the document will look approximately like this: «chemist-expert», «chemist-researcher», «chemistry teacher», «mining engineer», «metallurgical engineer», and so on. Thus, employers will better understand whom they are hiring.

According to the Ministry of Science, the President of Russia has signed a decree expanding the pilot project. Now the government will approve not only the list of specialities for which one can study, but also the professions that will be assigned to graduates.

Bachelors and masters who have already completed their studies should not worry about the innovations. Their diplomas will retain their status as documents of higher education.

But these are not all the changes in the education system. Universities also expect changes related to the number of places. For example, for engineering, agricultural, medical, mathematical, and natural science specialities, the number of budget places is planned to be increased. However, for humanities, arts, and culture, it will be reduced.

For paid training programs, it has been proposed to completely prohibit admission to universities with Unified State Exam scores below 50 points.
