On the evening of January 28, waste began smoking at the solid municipal waste landfill in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. According to Antonina Pshenichnaya, minister of housing and utilities for Rostov Region, the cause was temperature fluctuations. The waste is smoldering over an area of about 600 square meters, with no open fire.
The elimination of the hotspots began on January 29. The regional operator «EkoTsentr» started covering the problematic areas with soil. The work is planned to be fully completed by January 31.
«Five units of equipment (an excavator, a bulldozer, and three dump trucks) will be used for layering soil over the hotspots. If necessary, the amount of equipment can be increased,» Pshenichnaya wrote in her Telegram channel.
