Rybinsk Mayor Announces Resolution of City's Smell Issue

For several weeks, residents of Rybinsk reported a pungent smell in the air, suggesting that it originated from the burning of livestock at a local poultry farm due to an avian flu outbreak.
Mayor Dmitry Rudakov commented on the situation on January 27 during a broadcast on the television channel «Rybinsk-40».
We initially directed our actions to protect the citizens. The main requirement we set before the Ministry of Agriculture was to prevent negative smells in the city. As soon as they appeared, municipal control staff were deployed. Together with the sanitary-epidemiological station, a series of samples were taken and appeals were sent in all directions,he said.
Rudakov emphasized that during the organization of disposal, the wind rose was taken into account to minimize impact on the city.
The interests of Rybinsk were considered. Today, I can state that Rybinsk will no longer face this problem,he added.
The first complaints about the strong stench came from citizens during the New Year holidays. The authorities of the Yaroslavl region officially did not comment on the events, but the regional Investigative Committee began an investigation based on the appeals.
Later, the issue was raised at the federal level. The State Duma Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources, and Environmental Protection, chaired by Dmitry Kobylkin, prepared an appeal to the Environmental Prosecutor«s Office and Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Management) demanding an unscheduled on-site inspection.
