The landfill near the village of Ulety, which caught fire in the first days of the new year, continues to smoke, but the fire has now been localized over an area of one hectare, the administration of Uletovsky district reported on January 24 in the messenger MAX.

Fire containment efforts focus on preventing the blaze from spreading to new sections of the landfill.

Earlier, district head Alexander Sinkevich said that the fire started around January 9 or on the evening of January 8. This is because local residents throw household waste along with smoldering ashes. Since January 13, heavy machinery has been working at the landfill. The district head noted that smoke from the fire reaches Ulety, but residents of Khadakta are suffering the most from it.

«The further spread of the fire to new areas of the landfill has been stopped. Excavators are digging into the compacted layers of waste, as high temperatures and smoldering persist inside them. The thickness of some areas reaches up to 4 meters in places. Specialized equipment from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) is conducting deep watering with water,» the message states.

Also, the administration of Uletovsky district explained that the «fragmentation» method will be applied: the one-hectare area is planned to be divided into smaller sectors to extinguish the fire in each separately. This is a more effective method for combating waste smoldering than just surface watering. The grouping of forces and resources will work throughout all weekend days.
