A landfill has been burning for almost two weeks near a federal highway in the Uletovsky district of Zabaykalsky Krai. District head Alexander Sinkevich confirmed this information to a Chita.Ru correspondent on January 20.
Earlier, Sinkevich said that the fire started approximately on January 9 or the evening of January 8. He attributed the cause to local residents disposing of household waste together with smoldering ash. Heavy machinery began working at the landfill on January 13. The district head noted that smoke from the fire reaches the town of Ulety, but residents of the nearby settlement of Khadakta suffer the most.
«The fight against the fire continues, the landfill continues to burn. This is still the same fire,» said Alexander Sinkevich.
A message in the district«s Telegram channel on January 20 stated that machinery was again working at the Uletovsky solid waste landfill. A bulldozer was cutting off burning piles of garbage while firefighters from unit No. 36 were dousing the burning areas.
«As we have already reported, the work is complicated by heavy smoke and wind. The firefighting will continue tomorrow. A meeting of the operational headquarters with all relevant agencies is scheduled for the morning at the district administration,» the message said.
