Don residents react to plans for greening restoration after dust storms

The Rostov region is set to start addressing greening issues. The state forest belts — of which there are only three in the region — are planned to be put in order. No one has looked after them for many years. And the Botanical Garden of Southern Federal University (SFU) will create a special nursery to breed plants for the greening of Rostov. It will feature species resistant to the local climate.

Many Don residents believe these projects are indeed needed for the region, but fear that problems will arise in their implementation. Recently, the greening situation in the region has been difficult. We have collected comments from 161.RU readers.

«There used to be a nursery between the old airport and Alexandrovka. Everything worked, now it»s all built up.«
«If a plot is intended for development and there are trees growing there — at the slightest opportunity, don»t cut them down, preserve them, dig them up and transplant them. At least for forming forest belts.«
«We should plant poplars. The best tree. For cleaning the city air.»
«We just can»t restore the forest belt by the stadium.«
«Forestry enterprises always used to grow and plant trees. They had a plan for the number of plantings. They looked after the forest belts. The Botanical Garden alone won»t do anything. Besides planting, you also need to constantly monitor all this. It«s necessary to control so that farmers don»t cut down forest belts for their plowlands. Bring back the forestry enterprises, and you«ll have happiness.»
«They woke up. After the annual dust storms. Only this needs to be done not at the regional level, but at the federal one. The wind knows nothing about the administrative borders of the region.»
«They woke up, thank God. In the 90s, they sold off the lands to private hands, and those people cut down all the forest belts to have more land. I very much doubt that there were agronomists and technologists among them. And here is the result. These »new owners« didn»t even know what the forest belts were for. Maybe now they«ve realized.»
Greening in the Rostov region has had serious problems for a long time. For example, the Rostov administration will go to court over 16 thousand dead seedlings — they were planted two years ago to replace those cut down for the Western Chord. In the autumn of 2025, on the central alley in Novocherkassk, they cut down thirty healthy pine trees — which sparked a scandal.
