Man in Kurgan Region to Face Trial for WWII Veteran Murder

In the Kurgan Region, a 39-year-old resident of the city of Shadrinsk will face trial for a crime committed in 2009. According to the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Kurgan Region, the investigation has completed the criminal case regarding the robbery and murder of a Great Patriotic War veteran.
In June 2009, in the village of Chashi in the Kargapolsky District, a social worker found an elderly woman with signs of violent death, as well as her disabled son with numerous injuries. Money and state awards were missing from the deceased«s home. At that time, it was not possible to find the perpetrator or establish his identity.
In 2025, investigators and forensic experts from the regional Investigative Committee, together with employees of the Kurgan Region Interior Ministry and colleagues from Yekaterinburg, re-examined the materials and investigated evidence from the crime scene.
A DNA profile belonging to a man born in 1986 was found on a weapon. Witnesses were also identified who pointed to the suspect. The investigation determined that in June 2009, the accused went to the elderly woman to borrow money, but was refused and killed the homeowner. Then, the man inflicted knife wounds on her son to eliminate a witness. The accused stole about 14,000 rubles (approximately $154 at current rates), an Order of the Patriotic War II class, and fled.
On December 2, 2025, the man was detained. For the period of the investigation, the man was placed in a pre-trial detention center. The criminal case will soon be sent to court for consideration on the merits.
