In the center of Nizhny Novgorod, a flock of waxwings enlivened the winter landscape by gathering on a rowan tree for feeding. The birds actively pecked at the juicy berries, calling out to each other, creating a lively scene. The moment was captured by photographer Natalya Burukhina.
Recently, in the Sovetsky district of the city, bullfinches were observed – birds rare for the Nizhny Novgorod region, which also fed on rowan berries.
Moreover, this season in the region, kingfishers were noticed staying for the winter. These birds, usually inhabiting the tropics, are represented in Russia by the common species. Small, with bright plumage and a long beak, they resemble hummingbirds. Kingfishers are listed in the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region due to the rarity of encounters.
