Rabies quarantine lifted in Yakutia village after nearly a year

Rabies outbreaks in the region have led to infections in domestic animals such as dogs and reindeer.
Head of Yakutia Aisen Nikolaev signed a decree to cancel the rabies quarantine in the village of Chokurdakh, Allaikhovsky District. Outbreaks of the infection were identified in March of last year. The document was signed on January 19.
Restrictive measures were in effect from March 31. Aisen Nikolaev notes that the lifting of the quarantine is related to the full implementation of the plan for veterinary preventive measures.
Allaikhovsky District has not faced the threat of rabies for the first time. In 2023, there were five cases of rabies in animals. As the head of the district Yakov Eliseev reported then, wild foxes and arctic foxes began to approach human settlements more often. As a result, infection cases were registered in a dog in the village of Chokurdakh and domestic reindeer in the herd of the nomadic tribal community «Keremekhit» near Olenegorsk. This forced the authorities to start a large-scale revaccination.
The Allaikhovsky branch of veterinary services notes that, despite the cancellation of the quarantine, revaccination of domestic animals remains mandatory.
