Injured Long-eared Owl Rescued in Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

A long-eared owl was rescued in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin after being found on a windowsill of the city hall building. Assistance was provided by Sergey Bakka, chairman of the regional branch of the Russian Bird Conservation Union, as well as veterinary assistant and volunteer Darya Konova.
The owl was promptly sent for examination to a veterinarian from «Zoozashchita-NN» (Animal Protection-NN). It turned out the bird had suffered a traumatic brain injury. The animal now requires special care.
«The owl is doing relatively well. Due to the traumatic brain injury, it cannot eat on its own, but it»s encouraging that it«s energetic and angry. It»s too early to make any predictions. The prognosis is cautious,« Darya Konova said on the social media page of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Bird Conservation Union.
In a conversation with NN.RU, Konova clarified that the owl is currently living with her. Unfortunately, it cannot be ruled out that the animal might die at any moment. «The fact is that birds with traumatic brain injuries are very unpredictable in terms of recovery,» Darya Konova explained. According to her, the owl likely suffered from an attack by crows.
We also reported that in January, NN.RU photojournalist Natalya Burukhina captured on camera rare birds for the region — bullfinches, also known as Finnish parrots, as they were feasting on rowan berries in the Sovetsky district of Nizhny Novgorod. More about these birds is in the material.
