Yugra residents warned as temperatures drop 15 degrees below norm

Emergency services reported abnormally cold weather that will set in in Yugra from January 21 to 25. According to the forecast, in the next two days, January 22 and 23, air temperature in some areas of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO) will drop to -36°C (-33°F) and below at night.

«Across the entire territory of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — Yugra from January 21 to 25, a dangerous phenomenon is expected: abnormally cold weather. The average daily air temperature is 15 degrees Celsius (27 degrees Fahrenheit) or more below the climatic norm,» — stated in the message from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM).

According to the regional EMERCOM, in such weather, it is especially important to follow safety measures and recommendations to avoid hypothermia, frostbite, and other dangerous situations.

Rules of conduct in severe frost conditions:

  • Limit time outdoors, especially for children and the elderly.

  • Dress in layers, wear warm shoes, a hat, and mittens.

  • Avoid long trips in personal vehicles. Be prepared for winter emergencies on the road.

  • Refrain from consuming alcohol outdoors.

  • Monitor the condition of relatives and close ones living in private houses.

  • Drivers. Be extremely attentive on the roads. Observe speed limits, distance, avoid sudden maneuvers. Ensure the car is in good condition, with a full tank of fuel. Bring warm clothes, a thermos with a hot drink, a shovel, a tow rope, and jumper cables.

  • Pedestrians. Cross the road only at designated places, ensuring safety. Wear clothing with reflective elements. Be attentive and cautious on slippery areas.

    Rescuers also recommend informing close ones of your location. Especially if planning a long trip to remote areas.
