Petunia seeds for seedlings can be sown as early as January — this way the gardener will get lush flowering already in May, but a later sowing is also quite acceptable. Moreover, strong seedlings can be obtained not only by the usual method in a pot, but also by resorting to a trick that will make the plants stronger. Let«s explore the nuances of sowing with an agronomist.

When to Plant Petunia Seeds for Seedlings

Petunia seeds for seedlings are planted from late January and throughout February. Depending on the variety, the plant blooms 60–80 days after germination, so it is quite acceptable to sow petunias in early March as well. Only in this case, flowering will not occur before June.

“Petunias can bloom until late autumn and become even lusher from pruning. Cuttings also benefit the plant, and with their help, you can save on seedlings: sow a few plants, then take cuttings from them and propagate,” advised Lyudmila Shubina, agronomist, candidate of agricultural sciences.

Whichever of the three common sowing methods you choose, there are several important rules, without which you cannot get a strong plant. First: in February, there is too little light.

“Petunias are very finicky at the seedling stage. Seedlings must be supplemented with light, otherwise they will stretch and become weak. Keep the seedlings under film for one to two weeks until the root firmly establishes itself,” explained the agronomist. “Water the seedlings very carefully, with a finger or pipette near the root until the plants strengthen.”

According to the lunar calendar for gardeners, until the end of January 2026, the most favorable days for sowing seedlings are: the 26th, 27th, 30th, and 31st. It is not advisable to work with seedlings on the 24th and 25th.

In February, favorable days are: the 1st, 4th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, and 28th. The most unfavorable days are the 16th and 17th. In early March, you can sow petunias on the 3rd, 4th, and 8th.

Simple Sowing Method

Traditionally, petunias are first sown in a common seedling pot. There should be drainage at the bottom, for example, expanded clay or pebbles. The soil should be light and nutritious.

First, water the soil with room-temperature water, to which a little potassium permanganate can be added for additional disinfection. If the seeds are without granules, simply sprinkle them on the surface, spray, and cover the pot with film. If they are granules — it«s better to place them about a centimeter apart from each other.

“The granules need to be sprayed generously so that they dissolve and the seed opens up. If left as is, it won«t germinate,” warned the specialist. “Remove the film periodically and moisten the soil.”

The pot should be placed in a warm and bright place. On average, petunias germinate in 7–14 days after sowing.

Sowing Petunias in Peat Pellets

For those who don«t want to mess with soil and then with pricking out — transplanting seedlings from a common pot into individual ones — peat pellets are an ideal option. But as always, there are nuances.

“Peat pellets can be acidic, then the seedlings won«t germinate and develop. In this case, you»ll have to water with calcium nitrate to deacidify the substrate,” warned the agronomist. “And such pellets dry out quickly, they need to be constantly moistened.”

Place the pellets in a container, carefully pour room-temperature water over them. Leave for 20 minutes, then drain the excess liquid, place one seed in each special indentation. Moisten, cover with film, and place in a warm and bright place. Be sure to spray and ventilate every day.

Sowing Petunias on Snow

In nature, petunias go through the entire cycle; cold and snow awaken the seeds. In gardening, this process, called stratification, can also be used to your advantage.

The cold awakens the embryo, so seedlings may appear earlier. Take a pot, add drainage, nutritious soil, and moisten it. Collect clean snow and pack it tightly on the soil so that the snow layer is about two centimeters high. Carefully place the seeds on the snow. Cover with film and place in a warm and bright place. Don«t worry about the granule coating — the snow will dissolve it.
