Samara residents witness a wonder on the Volga — video

Residents of Samara, who decided to spend the evening on the ice of the Volga, shared footage of a rare natural phenomenon with 63.RU. Not far from the Nekrasovsky Descent, they noticed underwater ice.
Large chunks of frozen water were floating downstream. In places where the ice was transparent enough, these «travelers» could be seen.
«Underwater ice is a unique natural phenomenon. We saw it near the Nekrasovsky Descent, next to the hovercraft route,» the author of the video told 63.RU.
He suggested that the ice floes form in a polynya. It is located a little upstream. The Samara resident explained that the water freezes there and then flows under the ice.
It seems this phenomenon cannot cause serious problems. But a few years ago, Samara residents learned a new word — slush ice. As representatives of RKS (Russian Utility Systems) explained then, the water both froze and remained liquid at the same time. As a result, the crystals clogged the water intake of the NFS (Northern Filter Station) in Studeny Ravine, and part of the city«s residents were left without cold water.
