Samara Announces Date for Maslenitsa Winter Farewell

For several consecutive years, Maslena has not been burned in central Samara.
The date for mass celebrations dedicated to Maslenitsa has been announced by representatives of the Samara city administration.
According to them, the holiday will take place on February 22. Traditionally, the central venue will be Kuibyshev Square.
Thus, Maslenitsa week will begin on Monday, February 16.
One of the stages of preparation for the event will be the «Samara Maslena» competition. It will start this coming Sunday, February 1. From that moment, all interested parties can submit their applications to participate in the contest.
There will be three categories in the competition: «Traditional Ritual Doll», «Modern Ritual Doll», and «Eco-doll from Natural Materials». Both groups and individual authors can participate. Applications will be accepted until February 13.
The organizers have set several conditions for the dolls:
height — not less than 0.7 meters (about 2 feet 4 inches);
stable support (platform or crossbase) for installation outdoors;
materials resistant to precipitation, wind, and temperature changes.
Applications can be submitted via the form on the website. Several photographs must also be attached. If questions arise, they can be asked by email at samara.maslena@mail.ru.
All works will be presented on February 22 at Kuibyshev Square. The jury will select the best, and winners will be awarded prizes. All competition participants will receive diplomas.
