In Udmurtia, during the second half of the week from January 19 to 25, frosts down to –35 degrees Celsius (–31°F) are expected. This was reported by the press service of the regional Hydrometeorological Center.

In our time, when we increasingly hear about global climate change, relying on folk beliefs seems like a futile exercise. After all, even looking over the span of a hundred years, summer no longer seems as hot, and winter not frosty enough.

However, this year, according to forecasters, folk beliefs will come true. The Epiphany frosts (a traditional mid-January cold spell) will hit Udmurtia by the end of the week. The thermometer may drop below –35 degrees Celsius (–31°F). At the same time, no significant precipitation is expected.

Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, January 21, the temperature will drop to –17… –22 degrees Celsius (1… –8°F), in the southern areas — to –12… –17 degrees Celsius (10… 1°F). During the day, –14… –19 degrees Celsius (7… –2°F) are expected, in the southern areas — to –9… –14 degrees Celsius (16… 7°F).

The night from Wednesday to Thursday, January 22, will be even colder. The temperature will fall to –24… –29 degrees Celsius (–11… –20°F). During the day, the air will warm up to –19… –24 degrees Celsius (–2… –11°F).

But on Friday, according to the preliminary forecast from meteorologists at the regional Hydrometeorological Center, the Epiphany frosts will strike Udmurtia. Overnight, it will sharply cool to –30… –35 degrees Celsius (–22… –31°F). During the day, the thermometer will not rise above –21… –26 degrees Celsius (–6… –15°F).

On the weekend, January 24 and 25, the frosts will persist.
