Perm deep freeze to last until weekend, forecaster says

Frosty smoke hangs over the city during the severe cold spell.
Last night, severe frosts set in across Perm Krai. Due to the cold, three skating rinks in Perm are closed today, and the Gubakha ski resort will remain closed until the weekend. We asked Doctor of Geographical Sciences Andrey Shikhov for the weather forecast for the coming days.
Abnormally cold days have begun in Perm and the surrounding region. According to preliminary data from Andrey Shikhov, last night the air temperature in Perm dropped to -27.7 °C (-17.9 °F), while in some areas of the region, such as Nyrob, Kynu, and Vaya, it cooled to -35 °C (-31 °F) and below. Due to the frost, three city skating rinks in Perm have been closed, and in Gorky Park, attractions and ticket offices will not operate on January 22 and 23. Furthermore, the Gubakha ski resort has closed until the weekend and warned of potential issues with its lifts on Saturday, January 24.
Andrey Shikhov told 59.RU that on January 22 and 23, the air temperature in Perm Krai will even out: by midday in all districts, it will be around -20…-25 °C (-4…-13 °F), with only the eastern areas potentially cooling a bit more—down to -27 °C (-16.6 °F). In Perm, -22…-24 °C (-7.6…-11.2 °F) is expected. However, more severe frosts will arrive in Perm Krai at night.
«The temperature range will be greater at night. On the night of Friday, January 23, the strongest frosts will hit the central districts (in Gubakha, Kudymkar, Dobryanka, Chermoz, Berezniki) and the east (in Kungur and Kynu)—down to -35…-38 °C (-31…-36.4 °F). In some places, it could reach -40 °C (-40 °F),» the expert explained. «In the rest of the territory, the air temperature is expected to be -30…-35 °C (-22…-31 °F).»
According to the forecaster, on the night of Saturday, January 24, the peak of the cold will shift to the south of Perm Krai—there thermometers will show -33…-38 °C (-27.4…-36.4 °F), and in some spots even -40 °C (-40 °F). In the south, these will be the strongest frosts of the current winter, while in Perm and the rest of Perm Krai, the air temperature will be higher than on the night of December 25. Recall that at that time, Perm cooled to -35 °C (-31 °F), and the north of Perm Krai—to -40 °C (-40 °F).
Earlier, we published the weekly weather forecast from Andrey Shikhov and also reported on when the abnormal frosts will end.
