Heavy snowfall sets new January record in Perm

Heavy snowfall continued in Perm from the evening of January 29, leading to a traffic collapse: drivers were involved in minor accidents and the city was stuck in nine-point traffic jams. Doctor of Geographical Sciences Andrey Shikhov said the city had not seen such a powerful snowfall in the last quarter century.
On the eve of the natural disaster, Andrey Shikhov had predicted the past snowfall could become the most powerful of the winter in Perm. This morning, on his Telegram channel «Dangerous Natural Phenomena of the Perm Region,» the forecaster reported on the snowfall«s results. According to data from weather stations, heavy snowfall occurred in most areas of the Perm Krai. In Vereshchagino, 14 millimeters of snow fell in 12 hours; in Okhansk — 11; and in Perm, Gubakha, and Kudymkar — 10 millimeters each.
According to Andrey Shikhov, since the snowfall began, Vereshchagino and Okhansk are leading in precipitation — 27 millimeters of snow fell there, which is 60% of the January monthly norm. In Perm, a little more than half of the monthly norm fell — 23 millimeters. Over a day, snowdrifts in the city grew by 13 centimeters and now stand at 73 centimeters — this is a new record for the last quarter century, notes Andrey Shikhov.
«This is the highest value in January since 2001 (exceeding the January maximum of 2002 by 1 centimeter),» the forecaster explains in his Telegram channel. «Tomorrow, the snow cover height may be even greater, although, of course, it will not approach the January record of 1999 (84 centimeters).»
