Frosts send Tyumen elementary students home

On Wednesday, January 21, the Tyumen administration decided to cancel in-person lessons for students in grades 1–4 who study during the morning shift. The reason was abnormally low air temperatures.

«Attention parents and students of general education institutions! Today, due to the low outdoor air temperature, in-person classes for the morning shift in Tyumen city schools for students in grades 1–4 are canceled,» the city administration«s official message stated.
The decision to declare a «cold day off» (aktirovka) followed meteorologists« warnings of a sharp cold snap in the Tyumen region. Thermometers are expected to drop below -30 °C (-22 °F). Interestingly, such frosts during the period of Epiphany are not uncommon for the region, although on the holiday itself this year it was relatively warm, which allowed believers to safely perform the traditional Epiphany immersions.
Severe frosts already hit the region about two weeks ago. At that time, due to difficult weather conditions on major highways, duty officers from law enforcement agencies were even organized to provide prompt assistance to drivers in case of vehicle breakdowns.
