Abnormal frosts in Yekaterinburg are caused by the influence of an anticyclone. Temperatures around -30 degrees Celsius (-22°F) will persist in the region until Saturday, January 24.

Author of the Telegram channel «Weather in Yekaterinburg» Alexei Pulin explained the situation: «The figure shows the forecast for air temperature distribution on Thursday afternoon. The ridge of the anticyclone, stretching from Central Siberia towards the European part of the country, is clearly visible. With developed descending air movements in the anticyclone, all the cold is concentrated near the earth»s surface. So even the relatively low Ural Mountains serve as some obstacle to the spread of cooling to the west. During the day, the ridge will gradually shift south, and by Friday night its axis will be located over the southern part of Sverdlovsk Oblast. At the same time, partly cloudy weather with light wind is expected, and surface air cooling will be most significant.«

The cold period will be short-lived. Already this weekend, the 30-degree frosts will weaken, and by the middle of next week, abnormal warming for January is expected in Yekaterinburg. Temperature forecast by day:

  • 23 January (Friday): night -31°C (-24°F), day -24°C (-11°F);

  • 27 January (Tuesday): night -19°C (-2°F), day -12°C (10°F);
