Epiphany Frosts Strengthen Baikal Ice, But Dangers Remain in Some Spots

Epiphany frosts have affected the ice formation on Lake Baikal. According to data from the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) for the Irkutsk region, the average ice thickness on the lake at the beginning of the week was 6 centimeters. At the same time, it is dangerous to go on the ice in the area of Listvyanka.

The ice in Listvyanka formed on the night of January 21, and so far its thickness does not exceed 2 centimeters, and it is covered with snow. Rescuers are urging visitors and residents of the region not to go on the ice. Signs about the danger have been placed on the lake shore.

According to the Scientific Research Center for Space Hydrometeorology «Planeta», incomplete ice formation was also observed at the beginning of the week in the area of the settlement of Bolshoye Goloustnoye.
At the same time, on the latest satellite image of southern Baikal from January 22, the ice looks more impressive than in the images from January 19.
