Abnormally cold weather with temperatures down to -42 degrees Celsius (-44°F) is expected in parts of Kurgan Oblast overnight and in the morning on January 23 and 24, the EMERCOM warns residents of the Trans-Urals region.

The same forecast is issued by meteorologists from the Kurgan Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring. On their website, they report that cold weather will persist in the region until January 26, with temperatures 7 degrees or more below normal.

Overnight and in the morning on January 23 in the Trans-Urals, temperatures are expected to range from -32 to -37 degrees Celsius (-26 to -35°F). In some places, -42°C (-44°F). During the day, -26 to -31°C (-15 to -24°F). Over the weekend, the overnight and morning temperatures will repeat. During the day on Saturday, it will be up to -30°C (-22°F), and on Sunday up to -28°C (-18°F).

Due to the frost, the city administration recommends that Kurgan residents strictly observe fire safety rules, especially those living in private houses with stoves. Residents are asked not to use faulty stoves, gas and electric heating appliances, and not to leave heaters and stoves unattended. Drivers are advised to refrain from long-distance trips.
