The question of preserving trolleybus service in Rostov-on-Don was raised to the head of the city transport department Konstantin Lashenko during a meeting with residents of the Zheleznodorozhny district.
The official explained that earlier reports were based on a misinterpretation: «The document with the word »cancellation« was misinterpreted. Cancellation is not expected. We are considering the possibility of replacing trolleybuses for the period of coordinating the replacement of infrastructure, because it is in very unsatisfactory condition. Therefore, we proposed to concentrate [trolleybuses] on the most in-demand routes. We have sent all suggestions and comments for adjustments. [It is about] preserving the routes and conserving the network for its further restoration.»
When asked by one of the female residents about the prospects for restoring the network, Lashenko replied: «If funds are allocated — yes, of course. Why not?»
Earlier, a strategy project developed by «MosTransProekt» included a proposal to close eight trolleybus routes — Nos. 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 14, leaving only routes Nos. 2, 17, and 22. These plans caused a sharp negative reaction among Rostov residents.
After the ensuing backlash, the authorities clarified that the document is only an unapproved draft, and it is premature to discuss route cancellations. The transport department then reported that the existing trolleybus infrastructure would be preserved and its restoration would be possible with targeted funding, for example, under a new federal program.
Prior to that, the city authorities considered the possibility of purchasing new trolleybuses for launch on additional routes.
At the same time, it became known about plans to purchase 90 new buses for the city, 20 of which will be articulated («accordion» type). The total cost of the purchase will be 2.7 billion rubles (approximately $30 million at current rates).
