On the evening of 29 January, a child fell into an open sewer manhole in Surgut, Russia. The prosecutor«s office launched an investigation.

«At 18:44, the city»s unified dispatch service received information that a child had fallen into an open, empty manhole on Universitetskaya Street. The fall was less than two meters (about 6.5 feet),« the administration reported.

Rescuers and an ambulance arrived at the scene. The eight-year-old boy was extracted from the manhole and taken to a trauma hospital. His life is not in danger.

Preliminary information indicates the manhole is part of a domestic sewage system and is privately owned (not belonging to municipal or other resource-supplying organizations). The manhole has been sealed. The circumstances of the incident are under investigation.

«During the inspection, all circumstances of the incident will be established and a legal assessment will be made of the actions of authorized bodies and organizations regarding the proper maintenance of housing and utility infrastructure,» the Yugra prosecutor«s office said. »Based on the results of the supervisory measures, a comprehensive set of response measures will be taken.«

Law enforcement agencies have also organized an investigation into the incident.
