Voronezh doctors operate on six-day-old with intestinal defect

Doctors at Voronezh Regional Children«s Hospital No. 1 treated a congenital intestinal development defect in a six-day-old boy. This was reported on January 20 by the regional Ministry of Health.
The disease was detected in the child before birth, using an ultrasound of the mother in the third trimester of pregnancy. Then the woman was referred for a consultation with Roman Shcherbinin, head of the neonatal surgery department at Voronezh Regional Children«s Hospital No. 1. The mother ended up in his department after childbirth as well.
On the sixth day after birth, the boy was operated on. A large cyst was discovered in his abdominal cavity. This is a rare congenital defect— a cecum cyst partially blocked the intestine.
“After preoperative preparation, doctors performed a laparoscopic revision of the abdominal cavity on the infant— a minimally invasive intervention that allowed examination of the organs. As a result, medics noted a significant enlargement of the cecum and the presence of a dense, ‘non-displaceable’ formation in its lumen. Further, specialists performed a number of other manipulations, including removal of the ileocecal transition with the appendix,”the Ministry of Health reported.
The operation and recovery after it proceeded without complications. The baby even had almost no scar left. For five days after the operation, the boy received nutrition intravenously, then he was able to return to normal feeding. When the child was only 2.5 weeks old, he was already healthy. He was discharged home with his mother.
