Doctors in Stavropol Krai help residents daily. This time, a teenager came to the medical institution, and surgeons removed a large cyst the size of an apple.

As noted by the Pyatigorsk City Clinical Hospital (GKB Pyatigorsk), a 16-year-old resident of Stavropol was admitted to the surgery department with a rare condition — a median neck cyst that reached 8 centimeters in length. This anomaly forms during fetal development.

‘At 6–7 weeks of development, a gap forms between the root of the tongue and the thyroid gland in the embryo. Over several weeks, the opening should close, but sometimes this does not happen. Later, fluid accumulates in this «space» and a cyst forms. If it is not removed in childhood, it begins to grow, becoming visible and causing difficulties with swallowing and breathing,’ say the doctors.

The teenager needed to have the cyst removed along with the body of the hyoid bone, without damaging major blood vessels and organs.

‘Not even the smallest areas of fistula tissue can be left in the wound, otherwise there will be a recurrence of the disease. We started with ultrasound navigation and contrast imaging of the cyst and ducts. Then came the meticulous dissection of the formation from the surrounding tissues,’ says surgeon Vladimir Svezhantsev.

The surgery lasted about 1.5 hours. The patient had the cyst, which was the size of an apple, and the body of the hyoid bone removed. Now, the teenager is feeling well and is undergoing outpatient treatment.

Recall that recently in Yessentuki, an unusual case occurred: a three-year-old boy was brought to the city clinical hospital with complaints of severe pain and abdominal bloating. As reported by the medical institution, a pediatric surgeon ordered an X-ray, and in the image, doctors saw something unexpected: dozens of small foreign bodies were located in the projection of the large intestine. It was later found that the child had swallowed more than 25 stones. The boy«s parents could not explain when exactly this happened.
