On the evening of January 28, garbage at a landfill in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky (Rostov Region) began to smoke. It caught fire due to a temperature change, said Antonina Pshenichnaya, the Minister of Housing and Utilities for the Rostov Region. The waste is smoldering over an area of about 600 square meters (roughly 6,500 square feet). There is no open flame.
Today, January 29, the regional operator «EcoCenter» began covering the smoldering areas with soil. The work is planned to be completed by January 31.
«Five pieces of equipment (an excavator, a bulldozer, three dump trucks) will be used for the layered covering of the hotspots with soil. If necessary, the amount of equipment can be increased,» Pshenichnaya wrote in a Telegram channel.
