Unauthorized SIM Card Registration: Steps to Take

Scammers devise various schemes for stealing data or registering things in people«s names without their knowledge — this applies to SIM cards as well. NGS found out from operators what Novosibirsk residents should do if they encounter such a situation.
The press service of MegaFon explained that if a subscriber discovers that a SIM card has been registered in their name without their knowledge, they should immediately contact any of the operator«s retail stores or call the call center.
For each case, an investigation is conducted after the report, and necessary actions are taken immediately to protect subscribers.
«MegaFon subscribers are informed about all new connections twice. A few seconds after the service agreement is finalized and a new SIM card is purchased, all subscribers receive an SMS notification that a new number has been registered with their passport data. If you receive such a message but did not buy a new SIM, you need to contact our office and immediately block the issued card,» the company added.
A similar notification about a new agreement comes to the personal account on Gosuslugi (the Russian government services portal).
The press services of Beeline and MTS explained that on Gosuslugi, you can see the numbers registered to an individual in the «SIM Cards» service. There, you can click a button to suspend services and submit an application for termination. You can also contact the operator«s office to find out what this SIM card is.
If SIM cards were registered through the personal account on Gosuslugi and signed with an enhanced unqualified electronic signature, and the subscriber did not do this, then they need to take several actions. You need to change the password on Gosuslugi, block the numbers, inform the operator, and contact law enforcement agencies with a report about the theft of the Gosuslugi account.
