The Khanty-Mansiysk District Court has convicted Mikhail Artemenko, the former head of the ophthalmology department at the District Clinical Hospital, of taking a particularly large bribe, the regional prosecutor«s office reported.

The court established that between December 2016 and May 2020, the doctor received money and a travel voucher from the director of a company supplying medical equipment. In return, the defendant informed him about planned hospital purchases to ensure contracts were awarded. The total bribe amounted to over 2.8 million rubles (about $31,100 at current rates).

The former department head was found guilty and given an eight-year suspended sentence with a five-year probation period, a fine of over 2.8 million rubles, and confiscation of the funds to the state.

However, the prosecutor«s office disagreed with the verdict and filed an appeal. The state prosecutor insisted on a real prison term for the doctor, along with a fine and a ban on holding public office, as well as confiscation of property equal to the bribe amount.

«The prosecutor»s office, taking a principled stance due to the excessive leniency of the assigned punishment, is appealing the verdict, insisting on real imprisonment and the application of an additional punishment in the form of a ban on holding positions in public service,« the supervisory agency emphasized.
