Shelter loses battle to save cat found in dumpster
On October 14, the cat Flint died at the Barnaul shelter «Businka», after a three-week fight for his life. Svetlana Abramova, an animal rights activist and head of the organization, told NGS22.RU that she and her staff are deeply grieving this loss.
Flint«s story began in late September and garnered significant attention among city residents. An elderly and very sick cat was thrown in a box into a trash bin. The animal was very thin and covered in blood, so it needed emergency help.
«He was severely dehydrated. In his mouth, there was blood mixed with pus. Some teeth were missing, and those that remained were rotten. His temperature was low. Tests showed severe inflammation and anemia,» they reported at «Businka».
The cat was taken to a hospital for stabilization, where he was diagnosed with severe gingivostomatitis — almost all teeth were in terrible condition and needed removal. In addition, Flint had entropion, a corneal injury, as well as chronic kidney disease and advanced conditions of internal organs.
The animal couldn«t even maintain its own temperature, but at least its appetite was normal. Over time, with properly selected therapy, Flint became much more active.
«We visited Flint at the hospital. Such a gentle, affectionate boy. It»s still too early to discharge him from the hospital. Today is only the first day he started maintaining his temperature on his own,« they reported from the shelter.
However, after that, the inflammation and anemia began to progress. They started looking for a blood donor for the cat. People actively offered their animals, but their blood didn«t match Flint»s.
«The doctors decided to check Flint»s blood, thinking the issue might be with him, not the donors. And their suspicions were correct. Flint«s blood clotted instantly. He was diagnosed with autoimmune hemolysis. Therapy was immediately added to his treatment to curb this disease. Blood transfusion is not possible for him now,» they announced on social media.
Meanwhile, during his treatment, Flint gained a whole kilogram of weight. Many caring people monitored his condition. They actively sent him gifts: food, beds, and blankets. The clinic even allocated a separate box for his belongings.
But at the same time, the cat«s condition remained unstable. As told at »Businka«, the former owners did not take care of the pet»s health at all, so he had accumulated a large number of chronic diseases that are now difficult to even diagnose.
The shelter emphasized that they tried their best to get the cat back on his feet and give him a life of love and care, but his illnesses were too severe. After three weeks of treatment, doctors noticed that Flint became inactive and depressed, and at 5 a.m., his blood pressure dropped. Veterinarians attempted to resuscitate him, but without success.
«Forgive us, sunny boy... We tried very hard to help you and stabilize your advanced condition over three weeks of struggle... Run across the rainbow, Flint... You will forever remain in our hearts,» they noted on the shelter«s social media.
