Sochi to host Shostakovich performance on Leningrad blockade day
On January 27, Russia marks the Day of the Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Blockade. Sochi's city administration has organized 100 events across all districts for the occasion.

January 27 is observed in Russia as the Day of the Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Blockade. Sochi has scheduled 100 events in all city districts for this date.
On January 27, at the Zhilinsky Art Museum, an open concert by the string section of the Sochi Symphony Orchestra will be held, dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the lifting of the Leningrad blockade. The program will feature Dmitri Shostakovich«s String Quartet No. 8 »In Memory of the Victims of Fascism«. The conductor is Oleg Soldatov. The concert starts at 3:00 PM, with free admission.
«In Sochi today, 30 blockade survivors live; they have been sent congratulations for the memorial date, and meetings and ceremonial events are planned,» said Elena Kanyuk, deputy head of Sochi. «The main thing is to preserve the memory of the courage and patriotism of our compatriots, so we focus on informational and educational events for children and youth. The younger generation needs to know and be proud of their country»s history. We will definitely hold the traditional «Blockade Bread» action in all districts, and there will be open screenings of films about the Leningrad blockade. In general, we have prepared 100 events for the date.«
In schools, there will be lessons of courage, actions like «Candle of Memory» and «Blockade Swallow». Students will also create installations «900 Days of Courage: Blockaded Leningrad», and prepare exhibitions «The Unconquered City: A View Through Drawing». At the Youth House, the international historical intellectual game «R.I.S.K. January Thunder» will open. In all resort districts, the all-Russian action «Letter to a Soldier» will take place. On January 26 at 7:00 PM at the Youth House, all are welcome to attend an open reading of the patriotic play «Diaries of Ballerinas».
A concert dedicated to the Day of the Leningrad Blockade Lifting will be held on January 27 at the RDK «Central». At the «Yubileiny» House of Culture, the CCK «Voskhod», and the «Luch» Creativity House, as part of the regional film action «Pages of Blockade Eternity», the film «Karusa» will be shown for free. A screening of the documentary «Road-101» about the Road of Life on Lake Ladoga is scheduled at the «Sochi» Center for Culture and Cinema. A photo exhibition «The Alloy of Courage and Resilience of Leningrad Heroes» will open at the House of Culture in the village of Volkovka.
Thematic discussions, viewings of newsreels, readings of works by blockade authors – an extensive program has been prepared by all Sochi libraries. A mandatory component of the events will be the «Blockade Bread» action. Every guest and viewer will be able to receive that very ration, 125 grams. This was the daily norm for residents of the besieged city. The action will also take place on January 27 at noon on Flag Square and in the Lazarevsky District at Partizanskaya, 20. At 10:00 AM – on the square in front of the «Komsomolets» cinema in Adler, and at 2:00 PM – near the «Luch» Creativity House.
Leningrad was completely liberated from the Nazi blockade on January 27, 1944, during the Leningrad–Novgorod Offensive. The city, with food supplies for only a month, withstood 872 days, losing, according to various estimates, from 600,000 to 1.1 million people due to massive shelling and bombings, as well as starvation.
