Giant Tortoises and 'Akuna Matata' Amaze Russian Traveler in Zanzibar
Recently, Africa has been gaining increasing popularity among tourists. Natalia, a resident of Nizhny Novgorod, decided to see with her own eyes how people live on this exotic continent. She embarked on her journey in late autumn, when cold weather set in across Russia. In Zanzibar, the temperature soared to 30°C (86°F) at that time.
For accommodation, Natalia chose the village of Kendwa on the island«s western coast. Her choice was deliberate: on the eastern side, during low tides, the water recedes tens of meters from the shore several times a day.
Going unnoticed in Zanzibar is nearly impossible, as locals immediately take notice of tourists, curiously observing them and inquiring about their well-being and origins.
Visitors most often hear the words «jambo» and «mambo» from locals, meaning «Hello, how are you?» Equally common is the phrase «akuna matata» — made famous by the film The Lion King. It translates to «no problems» or «no worries,» reflecting the laid-back lifestyle of East Africa.
Stone Town, the oldest part of the island, is the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, the legendary frontman of Queen. Several years ago, a museum opened in his childhood home, which now houses a hotel and a small exhibition commemorating the singer«s life.
Prison Island, located near Zanzibar, is particularly notable. It served as a quarantine station in centuries past and is now known as the island of giant tortoises, which can grow up to a meter (3.3 feet) or more in length.
Natalia shared her impressions in the video above.
