Why Yaroslavl Is Using Sand on Its Roads

On the morning of January 27, residents of Yaroslavl noticed that the city«s roads were being sprinkled with sand. A reader reported seeing sand on Moskovsky Prospekt and Bogoyavlenskaya Square.
This raised a question among citizens: why is sand used to combat ice, and not modern reagents? To get an answer, a request was made to the city administration.
The mayor«s press service explained: »When treating the street-road network for ice, the municipal enterprise «Gorzelenkhozstroi» uses special reagents «Bionord», «Ekosol», and a sand-salt mixture. The sand-salt mixture is based on sand (which provides mechanical grip) and technical salt, which acts on the ice by lowering its freezing temperature and accelerating melting.«
They also noted that the sand-salt mixture is considered the most effective material for treating roads after snowfall.
Previously, Yaroslavl authorities reported intensifying work to clear snow that fell overnight. Moreover, new snowfalls are forecast in the city.
