Shalunov has been playing for Lokomotiv since 2021. In nearly five seasons, he has accumulated 185 points, scoring 104 goals and making 81 assists. «Maxim Shalunov»s «golden» goal in the Gagarin Cup final became a highlight in the history of all Yaroslavl,« the club reported.

The 32-year-old hockey player is a native of Chelyabinsk and a product of the Traktor school. He went through all the club teams — Belye Medvedi (White Bears) and Chelmet. Shalunov began his KHL career in the 2010-2011 season with Traktor, but at that time, he lacked the experience for full development. Later, he went to North America, and after returning to Russia, he changed several clubs, winning trophies.

Recently, Shalunov«s relations with Traktor have become strained. In the Gagarin Cup semifinal two years ago, his collision led to an injury to Chelyabinsk»s starting goalie Zack Fucale. Traktor«s head coach Alexei Zavarukhin then commented: »Let him in Chelyabinsk... be afraid.« Shalunov himself explained that he had no chance to avoid the fateful collision.

Last season, Lokomotiv and Traktor met in the playoff final. Shalunov, who was part of Yaroslavl«s top trio, scored the decisive goal in the final match, which brought Lokomotiv the Gagarin Cup.
