Childhood and Student Years
Ksenia Kachalina (born Oksana) was born on 3 May 1971 in Saratov, Russia, into an ordinary family. In interviews, she admitted that she grew up as a rebel—as a teenager, she got involved with a bad crowd and stopped coming home. At that time, the girl was even registered with the juvenile police department. Her parents decided to send her to relatives in the countryside for a whole year for re-education.
There, Ksenia did household chores and devoured literature—both domestic and foreign. The girl changed and returned to the city as a completely different person. She enrolled in the Saratov Conservatory named after Sobinov in the acting department. But soon she decided that she felt confined within those walls and set off to conquer the capital. In Moscow, she entered the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK).

By invitation from her course master Valery Rubinchik, she debuted in the film «Nelyubov» (Dislike). After that, she was noticed by Igor Maslennikov, and she appeared in the film «Tma» (Darkness). Kachalina also acted in the film «Arbitr» (The Arbitrator) by Ivan Okhlobystin. On set, they began a romance, but it did not last long—soon the director became involved with her friend Oksana Arbuzova.
She also acted in films such as «Nad temnoy vodoy» (Over Dark Water) by Dmitry Meskhiev (golden prize at the Taormina Film Festival), «Tri sestry» (Three Sisters) by Sergei Solovyov, «Tot, kto nezhe» (The One Who is Tender) by Abai Karpykov, «Tsirk sgorel, i klouny razbezhalis» (The Circus Burned Down, and the Clowns Ran Away) by Vladimir Bortko, «Romanovy. Marriage with Efremov
After breaking up with Okhlobystin, Ksenia began a relationship with musician Alexei Paperny. Their marriage lasted five years, after which the actress left the musician. She became pregnant with a girl, but the newborn died three days after birth.
With Efremov, Kachalina met on the set of Gleb Panfilov«s film »The Romanovs: A Crowned Family«. In marriage, they had a daughter Anna-Maria. The union lasted four years.

In interviews, Anna-Maria admitted that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder due to her childhood: Kachalina, according to her, allowed physical violence up to threats with a knife and suffered from alcoholism. Their communication ceased.
Alcoholism and Poverty
Ksenia Kachalina»s mother, Natalia Anokhina, blamed her son-in-law for her daughter«s dependency. According to her, before meeting him, her daughter did not even »drink champagne«.

The actress began to lead a reclusive lifestyle. Journalists who came to film Kachalina showed what was happening in her home: the apartment was littered with garbage, bottles and cigarette butts everywhere. She told them that in her free time she only sleeps and does not want to act in films at all.
In June 2020, Mikhail Efremov, while intoxicated, caused a traffic accident in central Moscow. The actor in an SUV veered into the oncoming lane and almost head-on collided with a small van. The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle—he died in intensive care from his injuries. Efremov was sentenced to 7.5 years in a penal colony.
Kachalina expressed sympathy for her ex-husband but said she would not bring him parcels. She also called him «a wonderful open major who is absolutely not adapted to these torturous conditions.»
The daughter wanted to take custody of her mother. But Kachalina did not believe in the sincerity of her intentions—she believed that Anna-Maria wanted to «put her mother in a mental hospital.»
